Pen & Ink Gallery

welcome

As with all my drawings, every detail of the pen & ink art that I create is all hand done. I use graphic pens on high quality acid-free paper to create each work.

See my pen & ink gallery below from previous projects and also browse through my special wildlife section of this website for a few more examples of my pen ans ink art.

If you would like to learn more about how to set up a commission through Friends On Canvas, you can find out everything you need to know in my "Learn How" section. Click on the gallery images below to view further details and larger pictures with steps and reference photos.

About Pen & Ink Drawings

Pen and ink gives an effect that is somewhere between painting and drawing.. Pen and ink refers to a technique of drawing, in which colored (usually black) ink is applied to paper using a pen or other stylus. Ink drawing is one of the harder aspects of drawing in general. One has to create shading and images through what's known as "hard edged design." This is not an easy thing to do, especially when trying to make something look realistic.

Pen & Ink Drawing Techniques

These are black and white Portraits that are very highly detailed. The Portrait is made up of tiny pen strokes, that will be meticulously hatched out literally hair by hair.I carefully place each individual hair in exactly the spot it should go. This process, depending on the breed and amount of hair required, can take 10 or more hours to finish. This is a very intense labor of love and well worth the time and energy. The whole painting comes to life as individual markings are added.

I use a professional technical pen with the smallest possible tip size available with only professional quality artist materials to create my art. This provides my work with beautifully dense black lines for just the right amount of shading to bring the Portrait to life. .

Your Images

As mentioned many times elsewhere in this site, I draw my portraits with the visual aid of reference photos that are either sent to me by filling out an Inquiry form, by attaching them to an email, or sent by regular mail if they are prints. Photo images sent to me can either be from a digital camera or can be scanned images from printed photos (high-resolution scans are best). It is imperative to send the absolute best picture of your pet that you can as I have only a photo to work from. The final outcome is more than anything else dependant upon that picture. Read about photos in the 'Photo Tips' section to find out more.

Work In Progress

Watch your painting evolve through each step in my blog where I display works in progress. I photography or scan your painting at various stages in the creation process and then upload the images there. Often I will describe the process in detail, add some of my own thoughts about the subject and maybe even suggest a few ideas that would make the piece really come together. You will be able to leave comments at every stage along the way and provide constructive insight for me with the goal of making your painting that best it can be. This is a very interactive and fun section of my website and you are encouraged to participate!

Framing Your Pen & Ink Artwork

As media go, pen and ink is relatively stable, being somewhat resistant to light damage, a known enemy of art. The general stability of a pen/ink drawing is depends on the type and quality of the ink, paper substrate, and past storage conditions, but I think it is best to put these drawings inside a frame. Before framing, it is best to mat the drawing in an acid-free mat board. The mating serves to keep the surface of the drawing away from the surface of the glass which could cause damage if humidity accumulates on the glass due to atmospheric changes in temperature.
